SUMMARY
This year's ascent of Tahoma (well, its foothills...) comes at the very end of summer. The route is anti-clockwise, entering the park from the south, just east of Packwood. Entry fee (day pass) is $5 per person. Lunch will be west of the mountain at Alexander's Inn.
ROUTE DETAILS

- Meet at Elmer's Restaurant
at 9660 SE Stark St., Portland, OR 97216 Tel: (503) 256-0333 at 8:00am
- Take I-205 north over the Glenn Jackson Bridge and join I-5 north in Washington
- Take Exit 68 to WA Hwy 12
- Go east on Hwy 12 approx. 4 miles
- STOP FOR GAS (84 MILES) at Chevron station in Mary's Corner
- Continue east on Hwy 12 via Morton and Randle to Packwood
- STOP FOR GAS (62 MILES) at Chevron Station in Packwood on main street on right hand side going east
- Continue east on Hwy 12 approx. 8 miles and turn left onto Hwy 123 towards Mt. Rainier National Park
- After approx. 6 miles take a left onto Hwy 706 and the Stevens Canyon entrance to the park. 7 day pass is $5.00
- STOP FOR PHOTOS at large turnout on left with view across valley to the mountain. At this point, we will decide whether to take the Paradise turnoff and ride the loop that leads up to the lodge.
- Continue on Hwy 706 going south and west to Narada Falls
- Continue on Hwy 706 through the Nisqually Exit from the park and STOP FOR LUNCH at Alexander's Inn
BACK
- From the restaurant, continue west on Hwy 706
- After approx. 13 miles, turn left on Hwy 7 going south to Morton.
- In Morton, STOP FOR GAS (85 miles) in Morton at Chevron Station on right hand side approaching intersection with Hwy 12
- Turn left out of gas station and head back into Morton downtown area and take a left onto Hwy 508 to Onalaska
- From Onalaska, continue west for approx. 8 miles to I-5
- Go south on I-5 to Vancouver and Portland
- Total miles: Approx. 320
- Longest gas interval miles: 85
- Conditions as of 9/20/09: No special road conditions. Have $5 per person ready to enter the park. Pay attention to other road users. Folks are looking at the scenery, not you...
